It is with heavy hearts that we report that Jeff Mana Walthall, a prominent surf photographer from Oahu, passed away Tuesday afternoon. Mana, as he was known, was well-respected and well-liked by all who knew him.
“There’s definitely going to be a hole in the lineups out here without Mana,” said Tony Heff, another North Shore surf photographer. “It won’t be the same without him.”
It is unknown exactly what contributed to Mana’s passing, but on Tuesday afternoon, lifeguards found him unresponsive in the water at Makaha. Some have speculated that Mana may have had a preexisting medical condition that led to his passing.
“I don’t think you could find anyone with something negative to say about Mana,” said Brian Bielmann. “He was such an upbeat person and his photographs were nothing short of beautiful. The photographers on the North Shore are a pretty close-knit group, so we’re all saddened and shocked by this news.”
